US to extend travel ban to UK and Ireland

US President Donald Trump is expanding his European travel ban to the UK and Ireland from Tuesday, in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

A 30-day US ban on travel from the EU’s Schengen border-free zone took effect on Saturday, but notably excludes Britain and Ireland.

Under the restrictions, American citizens and green card holders are still allowed to return home, but will be funnelled to 13 airports and subjected to health screenings and quarantine orders.

Asked about possible travel restrictions within the US, Pence said the administration was considering “a broad range of measures, but no decisions have been made yet”.
