Wizz Air, has announced a significant expansion of its Sibiu base with the addition of a second aircraft in summer 2025, marking another milestone in the company’s commitment to the region. This development will boost the airline’s total capacity in Romania to 33 aircraft and represents a 58% increase in available seats from Sibiu compared to last summer.
The expanded base will operate 11 routes to six countries, enhancing connectivity and affordability for travelers. Starting in August 2025, passengers will enjoy six new destinations: Vienna, Hamburg, Frankfurt Hahn, Basel, Rome Fiumicino, and Madrid. Additionally, Wizz Air will also increase the frequency of flights to Memmingen (daily service), Nuremberg, and Baden-Baden (both four times per week). Tickets for the new routes are already available on the airline’s website and app, with prices starting at EUR 14.99 (RON 79).
Since launching operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily expanded its footprint, recognizing the country as a cornerstone market. With 169 routes from 13 Romanian airports to 72 destinations across 24 countries, the airline employs over 1,500 people locally.
Speaking at a press conference in Sibiu, Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, emphasized the airline’s leading 55% market share in Romania. “We are proud to further expand our operations in Sibiu, aligning with our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy. The introduction of six new routes and the allocation of a second aircraft demonstrate our commitment to providing affordable and convenient travel options for our passengers,” Peneda said.
Vlad Vasiu, Vice-President of Sibiu County Council, hailed the announcement as a testament to the successful collaboration between local authorities and Wizz Air. “The addition of six new routes and an extra aircraft symbolizes the strength of our partnership. This expansion not only enhances regional and international connectivity but also opens new opportunities for the people of Sibiu and the surrounding areas,” Vasiu stated.
Marius Ioan Gîrdea, General Manager of Sibiu International Airport, echoed this sentiment, attributing the achievement to strong teamwork and shared vision. “Today marks a new chapter for our airport. The allocation of a second aircraft and the opening of six new routes demonstrate the power of collaboration and trust. This success is a testament to our collective effort to deliver tangible results for our community,” he said.
Wizz Air has also reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by operating one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the industry. This aligns with the airline’s broader goals to provide responsible, environmentally conscious travel options.
The new routes and increased frequencies underscore Wizz Air’s dedication to meeting growing demand for budget-friendly flights. By strengthening its presence in Sibiu, the airline continues to connect travelers with new destinations while supporting the economic growth of the region.
