Some focus their interest on cultural destinations. For others, vacation equals relaxing in a paradisiacal beach. However, there is an increasing group of tourists with a specific interest in diving destinations. For those, Dive Magazine has compiled a ranking of the 10 best destinations on the planet for the practice of activity.
It was a difficult year for tourism and the diving industry is no exception. However, Dive Magazine, a publication dedicated to the subject, decided not to cancel its annual survey and created a new ranking of the best diving destinations of 2020 , continuing the tradition of past years. The result of 30,000 votes over six months was as follows:
For the fourth consecutive year, Indonesia tops this ranking. Its location and geographic diversity means that there are many fantastic places to explore, such as the Gili Islands, Nusa Penida, Lembeh, Komodo, the Raja Ampat reefs or Wakatobi National Park. It can be said that it is a little unfair that such a large and diverse country keeps being the first in the ranking, but the votes don’t lie.
The North African kept the second place, conquered in 2019. The Red Sea with its crystal blue waters, warm sun, cloudless skies, bright corals and many animals, was considered the second best location in the planet for an underwater adventure .
The third place in this year’s ranking is occupied by one of the other pearls in Southeast Asia – Malaysia. In recent years, the country’s popularity has grown among aficionados. The islands of Sipadan and Mabul stand out from the rest as the country’s ex-libris in terms of diving. However, places like Tioman – where divers have a wide variety of accommodation available, from cheap hostels to luxury resorts – or Perhentian Island are also becoming very popular with visitors. The latter is a great place for beginners because of the calm waters with small reefs, a mixture of large and small fish and many turtles.
