Nature
Nature conservation has a long history in Sri Lanka. Many of the national parks and reserves date back to colonial times and earlier. These protected areas cover almost fifteen percent of the island’s land area, from the high-altitude grasslands and waterfalls of Horton Plains National Park to the coastal wetlands of Bundala.
The National Parks of Udawalawe and Minneriya are known for herds of elephants, leopards, wild buffalo and sambar deer. Yala is also a popular and rewarding national park with the highest concentration of leopards anywhere in the world. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. You can bottle feed the baby elephant or get wet during bath time!
