Bioluminescent Bays
There are few bays is Puerto Rico where water glows in the dark - for example Mosquito Bay (Vieques), Laguna Grande (Fajardo) and La Parguera (Lajas). The first Bio Bay, located on the southern shore Isla de Vieques, is the one that shines with the most intensity. Mosquito Bay was even declared the brightest in the world by Guinness World Records in 2006. Visit this magical place when moonlight is minimal, and view the millions of glowing creatures.
The mysterious blue-green light is created by dinoflagellates living in warm coastal waters. These micro-organisms thrive in an environment uniquely suited to their needs. A kayak trip into one of the bioluminescent bays at night is a magical experience.
