Active volcanoes
Costa Rica contains 5 active volcanoes and over 60 extinct or dormant. The perfectly symmetrical cone-shaped Arenal Volcano used to be one of the most active volcanoes in the country. It erupted in the past an average of 41 times a day but regular eruptions ceased few years ago. The verdant Poás Volcano has one of the deepest active craters and you can walk right up to it. The tallest volcano in Costa Rica has two main craters, one containing a green-tinted lake. Rincón de la Vieja comprises of nine contiguous craters that dot the volcanic national park.
