Costa Rica contains 5 active volcanoes and over 60 extinct or dormant. The perfectly symmetrical cone-shaped Arenal Volcano used to be one of the most active volcanoes in the country. It erupted in the past an average of 41 times a day but regular eruptions ceased few years ago. The verdant Poás Volcano has one of the deepest active craters and you can walk right up to it. Hit the trail early in the morning when a green water crater lake can be seen more clearly.
Irazú Volcano is accessible from San Jose by a road that leads straight up to the summit. It reaches an impressive 3,432 meters (11,260 feet) above sea level. The tallest volcano in Costa Rica has two main craters, one containing a green-tinted lake. Rincón de la Vieja comprises of nine contiguous craters that dot the volcanic national park.
