Azores Airline launched sale on non-stop flights from Boston to Terceira, Azores for only $426 round-trip!
The nine islands of the Azores scattered in the North Atlantic are really worth visiting if you prefer off the beaten track trips! The Azores will amaze you with the stunning beauty of the landscapes and the ocean views. There are plenty of natural reserves and ecological areas on each island good for hiking in fantastic scenery of breathtaking cliffs and refreshing waterfalls. Birdwatching, canoeing, scuba diving, biking, surfing, and whale watching are only a small number of activities the Azores can offer to the visitors!
The Azores archipelago, located in a contact zone of three tectonic plates, displays a rich and diversified volcanic landscape with basaltic lava flows. There are 271 lava tubes and caves spread all over the archipelago (48% in the Pico Island and 26% in Terceira Island). São Miguel is the largest and most volcanically active of the nine Azore Islands. The geology of the island is marked by three stratovolcanoes: Água de Pau (Fogo), Sete Cidades and Furnas. In the western part of Ponta Delgada city, you will find Gruta do Carvão, the longest lava tunnel of São Miguel Island (about 2,5 km of total length).
Mount Pico, on the island of Pico, is the highest point in Portugal, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft). Like Hawaii, the Azores are some of the tallest mountains on the planet, measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean to their peaks.
